Stunning Time-Travelling Family Fun

Published : 17 Aug, 2019

The UK’s biggest outdoor live family theatre event returns to its spectacular Bishop Auckland stage in County Durham this month.

Taking place every Saturday until 14th September*, Kynren – an Epic Tale of England transports audiences of all ages back through time on an unforgettable journey spanning 2,000 years.

Performed by a 1,000-strong cast and crew on a 7.5-acre outdoor stage, the multi-award winning family experience is ranked among the Top 5 Performances to see in the UK on TripAdvisor.

New for 2019 Families can immerse themselves in authentic Viking life in the new, pre-show Viking Village. Watch sparks fly in the Blacksmith’s Forge, see Shield Maidens at work around the fire and watch the Vikings challenge each other as they practise for their raids! Get up close to Kynren’s animal cast with giant Percherons, a gaggle of geese and some of the flock of sheep and discover the hill house that Vikings families would have lived in thousands of years ago.

Daring stunts and epic firework displays will wow family audiences as history and state-of-the-art pyrotechnics combine for an unmissable performance. Watch Boudicca’s courageous but doomed uprising against the Romans and the clash of Viking and Anglo-Saxon leaders at the battle of Stamford Bridge.

Experience the excitement of daring jousting knights on horseback charging at full speed, for the entertainment and merriment of Bishop Bek, the Prince Bishop of Durham, and his colourful entourage.

Witness the future King Arthur’s magical encounter with the Lady of the lake and as he draws the sword Excalibur from the stone.

Step aboard Queen Elizabeth I’s royal barge as she invites Shakespeare to introduce some of his most famous characters, trace the bloody outcome of England’s Civil War and follow King Charles’ final journey to the executioner’s block.

Join in the lavish celebrations of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and travel with the brave soldiers to the battlefields of the continent during both World Wars.

Amazing new features this year include a Viking longship burial on the water, with live Vikings on board, the kidnapping of a fisherwoman and lots of dramatic fiery effects and explosions.

Hungry tummies will be fully satisfied at the Food Village, which includes a 1940s bar and street party vibe for everyone to get into the show spirit. High quality and locally sourced snacks, sweets and meals are all available before the show starts.

During the summer holidays Kynren’s performances have an earlier start time, with attractions open up to three-and-a-half hours before the show begins, as well as an earlier end time so young children can enjoy the experience too.

Kynren offers a Superior Family ticket, for a good value option that also includes a Shuttle Bus Service so that little legs don’t have to walk too far.
