Durham-born Stephen Hall, a senior partner at Deloitte UK’s Newcastle office, is taking over the role from the charity’s founder philanthropist Jonathan Ruffer.

  • Setting the Wheels in Locomotion

    A replica of the world’s first passenger steam locomotive is being put through its paces prior to the premiere of the UK’s biggest outdoor theatre production in County Durham later this month. Part of the performance recreates the momentous first journey taken by the steam engine, known as Locomotion No.1 and designed by Robert Stephenson and his father George, on the nearby Stockton to Darlington railway on 25th September 1825.

  • Kynren Celebrates Volunteers' Week

    The 1,000-strong cast and crew of ‘Kynren – an epic tale of England’, the UK’s largest outdoor theatrical performance, is celebrating Volunteers’ Week (1st-7th June). Made up of volunteers the team - known as Archers - is currently hard at work rehearsing for this year’s spectacular which premieres on Saturday, 29th June. The brainchild of philanthropist Jonathan Ruffer, Kynren was created to be a world-class show which would act as an engine for tourism-led growth in the North East.

  • Making History

    Kynren prop maker and Props Team leader Mark Rossi surrounded by just a selection of more than 3,000 authentic-looking weapons, shields, helmets and banners which will be used as part of the UK’s biggest outdoor theatrical performance in Bishop Auckland next month. The retired art teacher and a dedicated team of 29 crew members are responsible for creating all the props for the multi-award winning ‘Kynren – an epic tale of England’.

    ‘Kynren – an epic tale of England’ has appointed one of UK’s leading pyrotechnic display teams as their partners for the new 2019 show, which opens on 29th June. Each show incorporates more than 600 separate pyrotechnic effects ranging from burning boats and riders on fire to the stunning fireworks finale.

  • Kynren Foal Named After Celtic Goddess

    An adorable donkey foal, who recently became the newest member of the Kynren cast after being born in the middle of rehearsals, has been named after a Celtic goddess. Epona, is the protector of horses, donkeys and mules, and the name was suggested by Leia Sunter from Darlington following an online competition.

  • Ultra Rare 'Viking' Chicks Hatch Out in Time for Starring Role

    An epic live theatre production celebrating 2,000 years of English history welcomed their newest cast members in the shape of a dozen extremely rare ‘Viking’ chicks. Considered an Old World treasure, the chickens were originally bred by Vikings and can trace their origins back to the 9th century. They were even nicknamed ‘hens of the settlers’.
